Our firm

A quieter way to do the books.

Ruth Ledger and Samuel Lane met on the night shift of a large city firm in 1996, both tired of clients being treated like file numbers. Two years later they opened a two-desk office above a bookshop on Harbor Lane.

The building has changed and the team has grown to fourteen, but the idea has not: fewer clients, known by name, served properly. We cap how many new clients we take each season so that nobody becomes a rushed file in March.

Kind words, filed carefully.

4.9 out of 5 from 286 client reviews. A few favourites from this year.

"For ten years I dreaded April. Ruth found a deduction my old preparer had missed every single year, amended three returns and got us a refund that paid for a new roof. Now April is just another month."

Questions

Before you call us.

Is the first consultation really free?

Yes. Thirty minutes, in person, by video or by phone. We look at your situation, tell you honestly whether we are the right fit and give you a fixed quote in writing.

How do I send you my documents?

Through our encrypted client portal, from your phone or computer. You can also drop paper documents at the office and we will scan and return them the same week.

Can you take over from my current accountant?

Easily. With your permission we request your prior returns and files directly, so switching takes one signature from you.

Do you work with clients outside Maine?

Yes. About a third of our clients are in other states and we meet them by video. We file in all states that have an income tax.

When should I book for tax season?

The earlier the better. We cap new personal clients at 60 per season, and it usually fills by mid-February.
